Everybody has their own tragedy. An opening monologue, accompanied by a series of precise, pristine and entirely people-free images, details a premediated murder - a familial affair told in the first person, voiced by the filmmaker himself. From here, an extended, elegantly lensed exchange between two key participants in this crime plays out, its charming contours charged by the viewer’s understanding of where this newly blooming relationship will lead. Belonging, the second feature from new Turkish talent Burak Çevik, is a startling, impressively playful piece of autofiction; a compelling, cleverly constructed exercise in reframing and restaging the unknowable peripheries of the past.
