The opening film of this year’s Face to Face with German Talent: The German Film Weekend is a moving drama exploring the complex lives of two sisters. Director Felix Hassenfratz's first feature is a very impressive debut. Maria (Maria Dragus) lives with her younger sister Hannah (Anna Bachmann) and their father (Clemens Schick) in remote Baden-Württemberg. Since the death of her mother, Maria has become the responsible sister while Hannah has rebelled and challenged her father's authority. While Maria enjoys playing the organ at church, both young women are bored and keen to escape, but something is keeping Maria from leaving home. When Hannah discovers a shocking secret, the film takes a more serious turn and explores an urgent issue with sensitivity and strong performances.
Lost Ones is a stirring drama that focuses on character, sexuality and sibling rivalry. Fans of thoughtful arthouse dramas will be well served by its powerful themes and psychological complexity.
The film will be followed by a Q&A with actress Maria Dragus and hosted by Anna Smith, film critic and host of the Girls On Film podcast.
