The Master Butcher (12A)

Face to Face with German Talent

The first two episodes of the brand new series The Master Butcher starring Jonas Nay (known from Deutschland 83/86) will be screened.

After WW1, butcher Fidelis Waldvogel finds a new life with his wife and child in North Dakota, founding a singing club that becomes the epicenter of the local emigré community. But then disaster strikes...

On his return from WW1,  master butcher Fidelis Waldvogel (Jonas Nay) finds there's no room for him anymore in his parents' butcher's shop. He promised a fallen comrade he would take care of his pregnant wife Eva (Leonie Benesch), so he marries her offhand. To find a better life for her and himself, he emigrates – all the way to North Dakota, where he meets circus performer Delphine (Alyin Tezel). While Delphine finds a new circus partner in the Lakota Sioux acrobat Cyprian, Fidelis opens a butcher's shop in and brings his wife and child from Germany. Fidelis founds a singing club, in which the men sing away their homesick blues, while Eva und Delphine strike up a close friendship. But the Waldvogel Family is in for hard times...

Departure and return, devotion and loyalty, love and responsibility, loss and pain: The Master Butcher is a many-faceted  portrait of a generation of German emigrés, based on the worldwide bestseller The Master Butchers Singing Club by American author Louise Erdrich. This high-value historical epic boasts a top cast and crew, starring Jonas Nay (Deutschland 83/86), Aylin Tezel (Breaking Horizones, Little Miss Dolittle) and Leonie Benesch (The White Ribbon, Babylon Berlin, Brecht).

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with actor Jonas Nay hosted by Anna Smith, film critic and host of the Girls On Film podcast.
