The London Australian Film Society, in conjunction with Sony Pictures, is proud to present the European premiere of LADIES IN BLACK, the new AACTA award winning film, with introduction from the director, Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy, Double Jeopardy).
In late 1950s Sydney, sixteen year old Lisa (Angourie Rice) takes a summer job on the staff of an exclusive department store as she awaits her final school year results. Quiet, studious and sheltered by very conservative parents (marvellously portrayed by Susie Porter and Shane Jacobson), Lisa harbours a secret hope to go to university. Stepping out into the wide world, her eyes are flung open to the cultural changes sweeping urban Australia via her interactions with the other staff in the ball gown and accessories departments, where the young Australian ladies and their older European counterparts both vie for her allegiance.
LADIES IN BLACK perfectly captures the rumblings of powerful change for these very different groups of women. A massive box-office hit at home, this film is set to become an Australian classic, with glorious costumes (sweeping up Best Costume Design at the recent AACTA awards), a brilliant script (based on the bestselling novel by Madeline St John), and perfect performances from an ensemble cast, all overseen by Beresford, a master filmmaker at the top of his game.
Ticket price includes a complimentary drink reception.
